OPERATION RESTORE –
Operation Restore is an initiative by the Rotary Clubs of Rotary District 3140 in which Burns patients are surgically treated to correct functional, non-cosmetic deformities and contractures, reducing the patients’ disabilities and improving their quality of life. This unique medical camp has been successfully conducted for the last 4 years, jointly by Rotary Clubs of District 3140 and the National Burn Centre(NBC)
THE NEED – Why Operation Restore – The Problem of Burns
- Hundreds of persons get burnt everydayand a number of them die every day
- Treatment of burns in a hospital is very costly– beyond the reach of the underprivileged
- Even if the victim’s life is saved, disfigurement or crippling disabilities followin most cases making their life miserable limiting their motor capacities.
- Majority of the most crippling burns cases in India are young housewives where the quality of life is impacted severely
- Of late several incidences of burns due to acid attack is adding to the number of burn victims
Some of the salient features of Operation Restore are as follows
- Complete treatment including pre-operative screening, corrective surgery, and post-operative care are provided absolutely free of cost for poor patients
- Operation Restore has so far benefitted more than 260 patients from all over Indiaincluding from far away places like Kerala, Orissa, Kolkata and Chandigarh
- Extensive burn related deformitieswhich affect the functional abilities of the patient are corrected
- The burn deformity surgeries are conducted by specialized team of doctorsincluding surgeons and anesthesiologists, and nurses, with specialized experience in the field who volunteer their services for every camp of Operation Restore that is held at the NBC.
- Doctors scrutinize each case carefullyas each burn related deformity is an unique one, and a thorough investigation procedure needs to be formulated for each surgery
- Each corrective surgery costs about Rs. 100,000/- and the biggest challenge is financing each surgery, Rotary Deonar wishes to augment the support to the surgeries conducted through subsidies offered by NBC and Rotary Deonar.
SUSTAINABILITY – Post-surgery follow up is equally important because such burn related deformities are at a very high risk of infection, the NBC is providing recuperating therapy with a residential programme in the Hospital for upto 20 days post surgeries. Continuous support from the NBC and about 14 Rotary Clubs including Rotary Deonar are providing the financial support of upto Rs. 20,000/- per patient and the NBC is carrying out the screening of patients and post operative care of every patient.
About 14 Rotary Clubs of District 3140 with Rotary Deonar leading the projects in association with the National Burn Centre(NBC) are also working on creating awareness about Skin donation. The state of the art Skin bank at the NBC Airoli has been donated by The Rotary Club of Bombay North
The screening of patients for the every camp is being done on every Tuesday and Friday between 1 to 3 pm at National Burn Centre, Sector-13, Samarath Ramdas Swami Marg, Airoli, Navi Mumbai. Patients can directly approach the NBC on the days allotted for screening.
